The author’s life took an unexpected turn in December 2008 when a friend, who had lost her job and was facing financial hardship, asked for temporary shelter. During one of their movie nights, the friend mentioned she believed in psychics and suggested visiting one to seek guidance on her future. The psychic predicted that the author would travel to Europe soon and meet someone special.

A few months later, the author reconnected with a friend named Michael over online chats. He had recently moved back to the Netherlands from Raleigh and was DJing as a hobby. After feeling burned out at work, he suggested visiting Holland for relaxation. The author booked a 10-day trip in August 2009 and signed up for an online matchmaking site
However, just before the trip, trouble struck: one of the author’s suitcases went missing during transit, causing flight connection issues that led to diverting to France instead of Amsterdam. With no luggage, the author had to book a hotel near the airport without belongings. Despite this chaos, they still managed to have an interview with a Japanese company in Leiden.

The author had plans to meet someone in Amsterdam, but a rainy Friday ruined their original meetup. They sent a message rescheduling for the next day and were relieved when the person agreed without hesitation. The following Saturday, August 8, 2009, they met Michael’s girlfriend for lunch before heading into the city.
Despite feeling nervous about meeting someone in person after brief online exchanges, the author was determined to make it work. As they navigated through the crowded Amsterdam Centraal on a busy night, their eyes scanned the crowd until they spotted her.
